Green Tomato Chutney – A Culinary Extra You Have To Try

Have you ever tried chutney made from green tomatoes? Since I have never seen any green tomato chutney offered in a store, my guess is that you haven’t. And it is your loss. Because green tomato chutney is simply delicious – yummy! I am not much of a vegetable gardener; I lack the time and space. But I do like to grow a handful of vegetables that are easy to plant, grow and harvest. Nothing too fancy, just some easy to do stuff. And a few years back a friend started giving me some tomato plants to plant in the…

Monday Date Night: Take A Sneak Preview

Sometimes very little changes can improve your life tremendously. Sometimes, one date night a week can make you very happy. It’s autumn in Berlin – in summer it is easier to get yourself some quality time outside your own flat – even on a weekday evening. The days are long, and everyone is happy to get outside after a long workday. Leave your flat call some friends for an after work gathering in an open air pub or just go for a walk in the warm summer air at night. But now it’s getting colder and darker outside – time…

Back To Nature: 23 Types Of Wild Fruit You Can Find And Harvest

Many of us do not have the luxury of an own garden. And even if we have, there is only so much fruit you can grow in a normal sized (or rather small) garden. Most of us are not living on a farmstead. But there are many different kinds of wild fruit right there in front of your eyes. And some of them are there for you to harvest as you like and use in your kitchen. Here are 20 types of fruit I found in the wild – or on free land that I could pick for free and…

8 Reasons Why A Partner in Crime Makes Staying Active So Much Easier and More Fun

I have been active all my adult life: running, playing volleyball, the gym, hiking and a lot more. And I have absolutely nothing against being active on my own – without a partner in crime. On the contrary, sometimes I simply need some alone time that I gladly spend on a lonely run. For many of my favorite activities, I do not necessarily need another person to meet and participate – well, apart from the obvious team activities like playing volleyball. And I actually enjoy a lot of the activity alone. I love running for myself letting my thoughts wander…

The Berlin Marathon… Fun, Pain, Achievement and Struggle

Sunday, September 25. Berlin Marathon. Over 41,000 runners in the traditional marathon distance alone (plus some 20,000 at side-events like the inline skating marathon, mini marathon and so on). 36,000 finishers. Among them: Marina and myself. I wish I could tell you that it was easy. That I made it in the time I announced a couple of months back here on this blog. That I made my goal of at finishing my first Marathon in at least 3h30. Well, I didn’t. But that somehow doesn’t matter to me. I knew that when I started running on Sunday. A lot…

A Loveletter To Trail Running

I have been a runner all my adult life. I am not a very consistent runner. I have times when I run 5 times a week and then I have a couple of weeks when I do not run at all. But running is still the sport that I love and can easily do wherever I am and without the necessity of other people or any additional equipment. Part of why I love running is that I love nature and being outside. Even though I am a member of a fitness club, I much rather go on a run in…

A Story of Life and (Near) Death… And Chihuahua Love

I write this as our Mia, our Chihuahua, lies next to me, sleeping and enjoying the warm weather and the late summer sun. Alive. Well. Happy. Beautiful. Not long ago, she was nearly killed by another dog. She dealt with injuries more severe than I believe I could endure without going mad. And she survived it all – stubborn, clinging to life and focused on survival. I found out a few things back then, things I’d like to share. I will tell you what happened when she got attacked later in this post – but first, I need to tell…

Siblings – Love And Hate At The Same Time

Yesterday a parcel from Cologne arrived at my doorsteps. My sister sent it to me, and that was the inspiration for this post.  What was inside? Empty bottles to refill with syrup, I’m doing recently. A pair of pink leather sandals :), a lilac purse (I need a purse urgently, but I’m more into red, because of the superstitious Russian believe, that red attracts money. Jonathan convinced me to keep it because lilac is the new red). And a book ‚The Rawsome Vegan Cookbook’! I love love love her so much, and I’m so grateful to her. As I’m recently…

Summer Retreat: Summer In The Bavarian Mountains

As some of you may already know, I live in Germany’s major city: Berlin. Even though I live in the outskirts near some beautiful lakes and nature, it is still living in a huge city. And sometimes I simply need a break, a summer retreat. Our parents made us a gift a long time ago: they acquired a family retreat in the Bavarian mountains even before they had us children. This old farmhouse on the slopes of a mountain has always been a place that speaks to my heart: It lies half way up a mountain, overlooking the wide valleys. There…

Starting The Season With Rhubarb Juice

Some time ago I started producing some fruit juice for the simple reason our parent’s garden produced so many apples and plums we simply could not eat all of them. I gave them away to friends and baked cake; I started trying various cooking recipes that included apples. But I still was left with hundreds of tasty apples. So I started to juice them. Now, spring is not the time of year where I am drowning in apples (and unfortunately that old apple tree died some years back). But since it is spring some other fruits start producing fresh fruit…
